In 2022, before AI became a mainstream topic, I spoke to Android developers at Greenwich University in Ho Chi Minh City during Vietnam Android Day 2022. My message was simple: go beyond writing great code and learn to think like a Product Builder.
At the time, I posed a question: Is good code enough to build a great product?
My answer was no. A strong developer also needs to understand the problems users face, why those problems are worth solving, and which solutions create real business value.
Today, that message is even more relevant. With AI support, writing code is becoming increasingly accessible. The harder work lies in:
- Understanding what customers truly need
- Making sound product decisions
- Designing resilient, scalable systems
- Measuring success through business outcomes, rather than the number of features shipped
That is why I believe developers should broaden their thinking beyond engineering and develop a product mindset.
